The FV101 Scorpion light tank was designed to be an air-transportable reconnaissance vehicle. Used by the British army and the Royal Air Force Regiment from 1973 and equipped with a 76mm gun it proved itself in many theatres, including the Falklands. Constructed mainly from aluminium the Scorpion was one of the fastest tanks in the world and capable of operating in extreme conditions. and as a result was used by the armies of seventeen countries. Although withdrawn from service in 1994 several variants have developed from the original design.
